Dayton Children’s Hospital in Dayton, Ohio has deployed a new gunshot detection platform by EAGL Technology Inc. as part of the hospital’s overall safety strategy.
One of only 31 independent freestanding children's hospitals in the country, Dayton Children's is the Dayton region's only medical facility dedicated to children. Magnet-designated and recognized as a top hospital by U.S. News & World Report Best Children's Hospitals in orthopedics, the hospital has more than 390,000 patient visits each year. Dayton Children's is home to the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics and together with the United States Air Force, shares the nation's only civilian-military integrated pediatric training program.
EAGL deployed more than 400 FireFly and DragonFly sensors link across the hospital’s multiple locations, providing the ability to pinpoint the exact location of gunshots almost instantly and alert public safety within seconds, allowing a quicker response.
The FireFly and DragonFly sensors operate wirelessly, making installation and maintenance easier than with wired systems. The sensors do not interfere with any hospital equipment or operational systems. Open architecture software makes it simpler to integrate EAGL sensors into existing security systems.
For Dayton Children’s, these were key selection factors. The EAGL platform collaborates with the technology already in place at the hospital including more than 600 cameras from varying manufacturers, a video management system, access control, a mass notification system and various public address systems. As the hospital expands, the EAGL system can be expanded as well.

The EAGL System reacts during an active shooter event (indoor or outdoor) in seconds by using its sensors to capture energy levels with acoustic characteristics and performing on-board sensor waveform analysis. The analysis results determine whether or not further captured event signal examination is needed and what other system actions to initiate. Groups of sensors, or even individual sensors, can be set to respond specifically to security plan requirements. Lockdowns, mass notifications, and law enforcement notification all happen in seconds.
EAGL’s sensor technology, developed by the Department of Energy and advanced with EAGL’s own IP, uses advanced algorithms to analyze firearm discharge event energy. Proprietary algorithmic analysis provides EAGL with the best accuracy in the industry.
